• Celebrate the Harvest

    February and March are the months in the wine industry when there is always s buzz in the cellar.  Its harvest time!  There is lots to do and important decisions to be made as to when is the best time to pick the grapes.  At Clos Malverne, Sauvignon blanc is always up first! These vineyards lie low in the belly of the Devon Valley and enjoy a cool micro-climate owing to precipitation from the dam next to it, producing high quality grapes.

    The Merlot, Pinotage and Shiraz vineyards will be harvested next.  As usual, we will proudly continue the Clos Malverne tradition of Basket Pressing all our red wines.  We are one of the very few wineries in South Africa still using this hand crafted method of making wines.


    Celebrating the combination of good food and wine, The Restaurant @ Clos Malverne, will release the new Autumn Menu with seasonal delights.  Choose between a 3-course food & wine pairing for R448.00 per person or a 4-course food & wine pairing for R538.00 per person.  We also offer an A La Carte Menu if you prefer single courses.

  • Celebrating New Wine and Menus at Clos Malverne

    With the particularly dry and warm season that the Western Cape is still experiencing, a lot of grape farmers (including us) were concerned about smaller crops.  Due to this season’s abnormal heat and water shortages, vines usually produce fewer grapes; while at the same time the berries are smaller and generally weigh less.

    Although these challenging conditions brought smaller crops, the dry climate was also conducive to disease free vines.  The result was a small, yet healthy crop.  Smaller berries also mean that the skin/juice ratio is much lower resulting in concentrated flavours that promise excellent wine.

    You can look forward to 2017 vintage wines being spectacular but perhaps less available.  Here is to another great vintage from Clos Malverne cellar!

    Devonet Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp and light wine with tropical flavours of litchi, melon and gooseberries.  Devonet Rosé is a delight to the palate with candyfloss and red fruit flavours of cherry and red berries.  This wine has a crisp acidity and is an easy drinking wine.

    Our exceptionally talented Chef, Nadia Louw-Smith will be introducing the Devonet range with her tantalizing new Autumn Ice cream.

  • A send-off with Father’s Day!

    We are on the verge of hopefully a cold and wet Cape winter…  but a lot of people say the most beautiful time of the year in the winelands is during autumn when the vine leaves turn colour and they become the most beautiful hues of green, orange, deep purple,  rusty brown and eventually blow off in the wind to expose the bare canes of the vines.

    It is also the season where the cover crop between the vines is sown and after the first rains, the fragile green foliage starts shooting through the soil.  It’s the  time where we try to rest a bit from the busy harvest time that lies behind us and evaluate the quality of the harvest that has passed.

    We were recently awarded a Grand Gold Medal at Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2016 for our flagship Cape Blend, the Auret 2013; the only South African red wine entered into the competition to achieve this!     It was a very dry growing season, but because we have sufficient irrigation at Clos Malverne we managed to maintain grape quality throughout harvest without compromising on watering the vines.  It was also an extremely hot summer in the beginning of the year which gave the harvest an early start, but with a cooler February and March the harvest was prolonged and our last grapes were only picked after Easter weekend.

    As usual all our red wines were crafted with basket presses ensuring a richness in texture and fine tannin structure… Meticulous care is put in the cellar to preserve the pure fruit of the grapes which developed in the vineyards on our unique terroir, and then to make sure you use the perfect oak to support the fruit flavours in the wine.

    Being involved with wine production, one learns to have patience—and with this, we hope you have enough patience to wait another two years before we are able to offer the promising 2016 red wines to our guests.

    The morning air is crisp; nights have become colder and it is clear that winter is almost here. With that comes the restaurant team’s well-deserved, annual break. We have had an excellent season and we would like to thank all our friends & guests for their loyal support during our busy season and our autumn months.

    The Restaurant will be closing for a short period between 19 June 2016- 21 July 2016.     After we rested our bones and rejuvenated the culinary magic wells, we’ll be returning with a brand-spanking-new Winter Menu that’s guaranteed to bring the heat. That, and our cozy fireplace of course!

    On a more personal note I would just like to say how extremely proud I am of every team member at The Restaurant @ Clos Malverne. We had a tremendously busy year and they have displayed their tenacity; grit and desire to create fantastic dishes, with utmost diligence & pride.  All of them have grown in their own way. The Restaurant would not have been a success with out them.

    Summer is officially over and it has been a busy one indeed! Over the traditional festive season and summer tourist visits we saw many old friends returning; made new ones along the way and sadly bid farewell to a few.

    We were blessed and humbled by the great support we received during the past few months, which saw us still sitting on top of the pile of Restaurants in Stellenbosch on TripAdvisor! While it is a great honour to be in this fortunate position; we know it is due to the loyal and gracious support of guests. So here’s to you, we appreciate your support and we’ll continue to  provide nothing but the best to our visitors!

    Our Commander in Chief, Executive-Chef Nadia Louw-Smith was recently honoured with the Mentor Award: Hospitality Management by the exclusive and illustrious Private Hotel School for her outstanding role in providing young up-and-coming chefs with guidance and training, while doing their internships at the Restaurant. Each year our Restaurant takes in two interns for a period of 6 months for them to get practical training in real restaurant.

    We welcome the seasonal change with a feast of comforting classics, conjured up in a scrumptious Autumn Menu which enadeavours to continue the new year’s energy with a myriad of wholesome tastes, unique to the season.

    This hearty new Menu, which will turn up the heat until the end of June, offers enthusiasts a four course lunchtime food and wine indulgence of generous portions at  R348.00 per person. Each dish on this sizzling bill of fare is served with a matching wine from our prized vineyards.

Or kiss the sizzling summer heat goodbye with a decadent Nutella Chocolate Brownie, served with a dollop of cherry ice cream, salted fudge crumbs and a cherry coulis and the our velvety Pinotage Reserve.

    A host of new, enticing dishes and delicacies are available to tingle your senses, while a select few stalwarts will remain, you know, just to keep you regulars happy.

    The tractors are rumbling, the bunches are tumbling!

    The new year has started with a bang and it’s full steam ahead for 2016. With the new year, it’s also a new harvest, and ours started officially today!

    We kick of the 2016 vintage with some fresh and zippy Sauvignon Blanc; harvested at an optimum sugar level of 22.5 degrees balling, these grapes are set to make stunning wine. While yields are forecast to be down by a small percentage, quality is certainly not lacking: fresh; ripe and healthy grapes are hiding in their canopies, waiting to enter the cellar.

    After all the Sauvignon Blanc has been crushed; mash-cooled and moved to their new fermentation tanks, we’ll move on to some Chardonnay and Shiraz for our Ellie MCC.

    Harvest is not the only item on the agenda, it’s almost that time of the year where you have a whole day dedicated to celebrating your love for that special someone in your life. To mark the occasion we’ll have a set-menu Five Course Food & Wine Pairing for Valentine’s Day, with light background music played by accordion musician Andre Van Vuuren. This afternoon of sheer gastronomic delight is ideal for food and wine lovers who enjoy a value for money, unhurried dining experience with a sense of place and includes a glass of matching Clos Malverne wine with each course.

    Founded in 1969, it has a rich history of producing award-winning, basket-pressed wines. The 1998 vintage Cabernet Sauvignon/Pinotage was the first Cape Blend to receive a coveted Platter 5* rating and the estate’s flagship wine, the Auret, the first Cape Blend to win the over-all South African Wine Championship in 2001.

    We are back from our annual break with a bang!

    Stellenbosch, as popularized in the dramatic and incredibly popular series, “Game of Thrones”, winter is not “coming”, but has arrived!

    The days are shorter and the nights longer; the layers of clothing increased and the will to wander out and about, decreased. To invigorate the wanderlust in the food & wine enthusiasts lurking under their heated blankets, The Restaurant @ Clos Malverne launches its delectable Winter Food & Wine Pairing Menu 2015, featuring hearty dishes to accompany the chilly season.

    Guests can look forward to starting their culinary experience with a starter of Cauliflower, Parsnip and Truffle Soup; served with parmesan crisps, pan fried enoki mushrooms and a parsley pesto; paired with our lightly oaked Chardonnay. This is the perfect way to start a leisurely fuss-free; outer-city dining experience.

    The Food & Wine Pairing Menu – which allows you to ‘do lunch in style’ without having to break the bank – has also been given a welcome winter whirl. This sumptuous 4-course menu costs R298 per head and each of the four courses are served with a glass of matching Clos Malverne wine, which ranges from crisp Sauvignon Blanc to the estate’s multi-crowned flagship Cape Blend, Auret, and popular coffee-style pinotage, Le Café.

    Firm favourites on the menu like the Grilled Springbok Loin and Fillet Steak, are joined by new renditions of gastronomic gallantry. Dishes like the Oriental Style Pork Belly, served with crispy crackling on a bed of egg noodles with pak choi, cashew nuts, chili, lemon grass, lemon zest and an orange jus; paired perfectly with our Flagship wine, the Auret.

    Having been on a well-deserved break for the past few weeks, Executive Chef, Nadia Louw-Smith and her expert team are eager to get back to doing what they do best: “They say absence makes the heart grow fonder and this was definitely the case with our team at the Restaurant @ Clos Malverne. In my 13 years in the hospitality industry I have never seen any of my staff been so excited to be back at work after our well-deserved winter break”, she adds.

    It must have something to do with the brand new cold kitchen that was installed in their absence! The additional preparation space will allow the Restaurant to prepare for larger groups and speedier service during normal luncheons. It is not only the kitchen facilities that got a face-lift the past few weeks, the interior of the Restaurant is also boasting some brand new artwork.     Winter has officially arrived and in spectacular fashion! It’s been a blur the past couple of months and it’s hard to believe we’re halfway to Christmas, yes scary isn’t it?

    It is during this cold winter months that we go into hibernation and take our annual break, The Restaurant @ Clos Malverne will serve its last lunch this coming Father’s Day. After a period of well deserved rest for Executive Chef Nadia Louw-Smith and her expert team, they will be back on the 23rd of July, and with a smouldering, sassy new menu to boot! The Restaurant was also blessed to receive another TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence this year for a fourth time running! We would like to thank our loyal guests and supporters without which it would not have been possible at all!

    Now that the official stuff is out of the way we can tell you of all the other exciting & interesting things that transpired the past while. Our winemaker, Suzanne Coetzee, recently went on a trip to Portugal as part of her reward for placing in the 2014 Perold Absa Cape Blend Competition with our Spirit of Malverne 2012. Suzanne shares her experience:

    I was fortunate enough to be part of the annual Cape Blend / Amorim tour recently.  The Clos Malverne Spirit of Malverne 2011 and 2012 was awarded as one of the Top 5 Cape Blends in the country for two consecutive years.  The prize for this award is to go on a sponsored tour to a wine producing country.The destination this year was Portugal and Spain.  We first visited the beautiful cork forests in Evora, Portugal then went onto the beautiful city of Porta.  Besides seeing the traditional Port houses in the city, we also had an extensive tour of a cork factory where the detail and intensity of cork production was overwhelming.

    A culinary and wine tour through the Douro valley was definitely a highlight with the breathtaking views and awe inspiring vineyards on terraces.In Spain, the Toro and Ribera del Duero regions showed us how versatile the grape Temperanillo is to work with.  Visiting wineries from ultra modern, to very traditional, the Spanish wine philosophy was nothing short of inspiring!

    What makes a tour memorable is not only the destination but the people accompanying you.  Being one of only two ladies amongst 16 men on the tour ensured that there was never a shortage of humour and a lot of laughing.”

  • Education in Action, in a fun way!

    Reaching future wine drinkers through a fun day out.

    The past weekend we were fortunate enough to have the University of Stellenbosch’s Tygerberg Campus, Wine Society, visit us here in the Valley.

    In a jovial fashion, the group of 30 strong students arrived on the farm, full of eager excitement to learn about the exciting world of wine.

    Before all the fun could begin, they had to learn a bit of history of Clos Malverne, where it all started, how we have evolved and where we are today. For to truly understand something you need to place yourself in the subject’s perspective. The story of Colonel Bellingham and the founding years; the first production of wine, to our anniversary of 30 years in 2015, was met with both interest and appreciation.

    The next item on the schedule was an Ice cream & Wine Pairing, presented by our    own head-honcho of wine, Amy Simmers. She explained the various flavour      combinations and why the particular wine pairs well with the choice of Ice cream. A   firm favourite among the crowd seemed to be peanut butter and banana ice cream    that goes with our Pinotage Reserve.

    The students undertook a guided vineyard & cellar tour to get a better    understanding of the various aspects of what goes into growing vines; the harvesting   process and the inner workings of a wine cellar. Here they were given the      opportunity to ask questions and engage, asking some pretty interesting and i  insightful things. We had to laugh when the question came: “so how many pineapples per tank do you use in your Sauvignon Blanc?”. A brief explanation on the subjects of varietal characteristics and terroir, resulted in amazed fascination.

    It was a fun-filled day of laughter, new understanding and hopefully a step towards reaching more young people as to raise the level of wine appreciation in our youth. At various wine industry forums it has been discussed and highlighted how important it is to educate people about wine, may this be a good way of reaching them!

    Stellenbosch – With Clos Malverne celebrating its 30th year of producing wine on the estate, it was time to assess the way in which they connect with their loyal supporters. As a result of this introspection, this past week saw Clos Malverne re-enter cyber space with a fresh approach, the launch of their brand new website!

    This sleek new site features several design improvements; the website was overhauled with a few key factors in mind: customer engagement with easy navigable menus; access to information and the utilization of the latest technology available to bolster its online presence. Guests can now find the latest menus for the restaurant; news; wedding packages; photos and of course, their favourite Clos Malverne wines in one convenient location.

    With e-commerce playing an integral part in the digital age, especially in the competitive world of wine, the timing for a digital facelift was perfect; partnering with specialist wine e-commerce establishment, Wineco, sister company to South Africa’s first online wine retailer www.cybercellar.com. The new e-shop is not only convenient; it offers customers the freedom to make up their own unique selection of wines, with no set options in terms of buying full cases of a particular wine. The e-shop is easy to browse, with a clear and concise design; secure and offers speedy delivery throughout South Africa.

    “We are excited to be able to offer an e-commerce solution to our customers, ensuring our wines are always available, with greater selective freedom than ever before” said Erich Zeelie, newly appointed Communications Manager. “As a winery, we want to offer as many ways to the reach the consumer as possible.” A strong focus was also placed on the new website being 100% mobile friendly, seeing that most South Africans access the internet via their mobile. “When you decide to visit a new restaurant; or look for an activity to do over the weekend, the first thing most people do is to visit the website of the establishment in question. Now if it’s slow, unresponsive or outdated, it reflects poorly on the business and more likely than not, has a negative influence on the way you perceive that business”, Erich explains further.
